The City of Montreal in collaboration with the Commission sur le Developpement Economique et Urbain et l'Habitation, held a public consultation to present their latest project and roadmap to circular economy. This was the first official education document of the City of Montreal, that was specifically dedicated to circular economy.

The objective of the public consultation was to get the public's input on Montreal's roadmap to a circular economy, as well as to hear from the public, what could be improved and better adapted to their needs.

Luc Rabouin, the borough mayor of the Plateau-Mont-Royal, and a member of the executive committee for the Développement Economique et Commercial, du Savoir, de l’Innovation et du Design, led the presentation.

Rabouin explained that the roadmap will help tackle the challenges that the city of Montreal must face regarding the ecological transition in relation to Montreal's economy. He insisted that the challenges are major, but that a circular economy is part of the solution. The circularity of Montreal's economy has to increase as the world index is decreasing.

To reach its goals, such as being a zero-waste metropolis by 2030, carbon neutrality by 2050, the reducing of greenhouse gas emissions and the reducing of residual landfill waste, the city of Montreal commits itself to taking bigger actions.

With the roadmap, the City of Montreal wants to position itself as one of the leaders in North America in terms of economy circularity. By 2030, the city of Montreal wants to reach a circularity rate of 17 per cent, to fight climate change.

With the roadmap, the City of Montreal will be able to identify the main structuring actions that need to be instilled to reach that rate.
