Social Housing, Affordable Housing and Ecological Transition are Priorities for Montreal

The city of Montreal held another executive council meeting, during which councillors discussed current priorities for Montreal.

Mayor Valérie Plante discussed her recent visits to London, Vienna and Paris to observe these city's current ways of doing things, as well as their recent advancements. The Plante Administration is looking to find inspiration on systems that could inspire Montreal's own approaches in terms of ecological transition, social and affordable housing as well as ensuring that Montrealers have a certain quality of life (urban planning of public spaces).

Plante also mentioned the need to make of Montreal a more natural and green city. She highlighted that the Frédéric-Back Park was an important and meaningful example of what they could aspire to for the entirety of Montreal, as it is a green site that used to be a polluted waste dump.

She also discussed the development of the Bridge-Bonaventure sector, which is still ongoing and is an important factor in Montrealers' quality of life. To improve the sector, the city is working on implementing active public transportation and the usage of the Port of Montreal.

The Plante Administration is also intends on 'pedestrianizing' the streets of Montreal, for the summer. It intends on making 10 important streets in Montreal pedestrian streets. Streets in the Quartier Latin, the Village, Place Jean-Talon and Outremont have been chosen to promote Montreal's city life.

Plante ended the meeting by discussing her presence at the Union des municipalités du Québec, where the administrations of the different municipalities convene. She emphasized the importance of this year's meeting as the meeting will focus on how the municipalities can adapt their territory in the face of climate change.
