Mothers And Allies Sit in Front of Francois Legault's Office to Demand Climate Change Action Plan

On July 2nd 2023, Meres au front Montreal, an organization urging the different levels of government to take action in the fight against climate change, held a sit-in in front of Premier Francois Legault's Montreal office. Around twenty people attended and participated to the event.

One of the current goals of Meres au front Montreal is to urge the provincial and federal government to act on the climate crisis and work towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 65% by 2030 rather than the government's own goal of 40%.

During the sit-in, Montrealers took chalk to the street and drew words and images to illustrate the urgency of the situation. The sidewalk was filled up with drawing of trees, the Earth, green hearts, their names, and sentences such as "It's burning". Many children were also present to emphasize the importance of a safe and healthy future for themselves in the face of climate change. Mothers, children and allies discussed among themselves for the one-hour event, and later on decided to sing a song illustrating their worries and calls for action.

The Montreal organization started the initiative back in April of 2022, and has recently shifted to monthly sit-ins. July 2nd was their 55th gathering in front of the Premier's Montreal office.

Meres au Front Montreal confirmed that they met with Premier Francois Legault in June 2022 to discuss concrete action they believe needs to be taken before climate change becomes worst or irreversible. They also confirmed that Premier Legault had been extended an invitation to attend the April 2nd 2023 sit-in, for Meres au Front's one year anniversary of the initiative, but that the Premier declined due to not being available.
