Montrealers Rally for Action on Ongoing Violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Montrealers gathered at the Palais de Justice to demand action from policymakers and international leaders regarding the ongoing violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Joined by protesters from across Quebec, they marched to City Hall, chanting “Free Congo” and calling the conflict a genocide to emphasize its severity. A live band accompanied the demonstration to draw attention and raise awareness.

Speakers condemned the decades-long violence, pointing to the complicity of the international community. “It must not continue this way,” one speaker said. “If today, we’re at the Palais de Justice, it’s to send a message that policymakers must take their responsibilities seriously. Why are they unable to protect us? Where are the sanctions?” Another protester added, “We hold the Congo close to our hearts.”

The demonstrators highlighted that these aggressions are neither recent nor isolated but part of a crisis that has persisted for over 30 years, impacting multiple generations. They stressed that the ongoing war is fueled by territorial disputes and the exploitation of the DRC’s vast natural resources, including coltan, cobalt, and copper—profitable minerals essential to the global technology industry. The conflict has displaced nearly seven million people and forced over 40,000 children into dangerous mining conditions.

Protesters also questioned Canada’s inaction. “We are here to express our concern over the tragic situation that continues in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo,” one said. Others urged the Canadian government to take a stronger role. “Canada has the capacity and the responsibility to play a significant role in easing the suffering of the Congolese people. Why is Canada not taking this initiative?”

The Congolese community in Montreal vowed to continue mobilizing, calling for accountability and immediate action.
