May Day Demonstration in Montréal Highlights Socioeconomic Demands

On May 1st, over 60 people gathered at Marché Maisonneuve in Montréal to participate in a May Day demonstration organized by Syndicat Industriel des Travailleuses et Travailleurs/Industrial Workers of the World (SITT-IWW) Montréal and Mouvement Action-Chômage de Montréal (MAC), along other community groups and partners. The event, held as part of International Workers’ Day, aimed to bring attention to a range of social and labour issues affecting working-class and marginalized populations.

Participants marched through the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighbourhood, ending the route near Joliette Metro station. Throughout the demonstration, organizers and attendees voiced concerns about employer practices, systemic discrimination, and rising living costs. Specific issues raised included the treatment of people on social assistance, migrant and undocumented workers, immigrants, queer individuals, and racialized communities, both in the work forces and outside.

Demands made during the event included stronger rent control measures, increased funding for social housing, and a higher minimum wage. Organizers also emphasized the need for greater financial support and better planning to address the growing cost of living.

Speeches and signs pointed to what participants described as a lack of political will to implement policies that could reduce economic inequality. Calls for improved access to public services and fairer distribution of resources were also present throughout the event.

The protest remained peaceful and was one of several May Day actions held in cities across Québec and internationally. While rooted in a longstanding tradition of labour organizing, this year’s demonstration focused heavily on affordability, housing, and structural inequality.
