Ben Craig and the Call to Action in Maillardville: Building Community from the Ground Up

On Face to Face, Genevieve Kyle Lefebvre had the pleasure of sitting down with Ben Craig, President of the Maillardville Residents’ Association, to talk about local engagement, urban development, and the future of one of Coquitlam’s most historically rich neighborhoods.

Craig’s message is simple but powerful: what is happening at the ground level is more important than ever. As Maillardville faces increasing development pressure and rapid densification, he believes the best way forward is to bring residents into the conversation, not just during public hearings, but as ongoing participants in shaping their own neighborhood.

The Maillardville Residents’ Association, under Craig’s leadership, works to serve as both a voice and a bridge between residents and decision-makers. Yet, as Craig points out, the association’s track record of collaboration with the City of Coquitlam is mixed. He cites the questionable approval of a local wine shop as a case where community concerns were not fully considered.

Still, Craig remains focused on solutions. “We’re trying to get as many residents involved as possible,” he says. He believes that a more active, informed, and unified community will have greater influence over decisions that affect livability, affordability, and the cultural identity of Maillardville.

Beyond advocacy, the association also hosts events that help neighbors connect and build relationships. For Craig, who first got involved out of a desire to preserve and enhance the character of his community, this work has grown into a mission rooted in civic responsibility and collective care.

His hope for the future is clear: a Maillardville where residents are heard, engaged, and empowered to shape the future of their neighborhood through unity and shared purpose.
