Ukrainian Community in Winnipeg: Adaptation, Financial Planning, and Unity

Життя в новій країні часто стає викликом, особливо коли йдеться про адаптацію та фінансову стабільність. У подкасті “УКанаді” гості Тенгіз та Алевтин поділилися досвідом, як українцям у Вінніпезі вдається адаптуватися, зберігаючи фінансову рівновагу, та як спільна діяльність допомагає побудувати новий дім далеко від батьківщини. 

Алевтин наголошує, що фінансові заощадження є критичними для новоприбулих. За його досвідом, мінімально необхідна сума для однієї людини на перший місяць у Вінніпезі становить $4000–5000. Ці кошти дозволяють орендувати житло, покрити базові витрати та витримати період пошуку роботи. Але навіть цих коштів може бути недостатньо, якщо ви їдете без плану, ваша англійська на низькому рівні і ви не маєте знайомих.  

Алевтин, який емігрував з Онтаріо до Манітоби через сприятливі умови для отримання резидентства, зазначає, що фінансова допомога у розмірі $3000 від канадського уряду значно полегшила адаптацію українців. 

Першою роботою Тенгіза в Канаді стала посада банкетного сервера в готелі. Завдяки попередньому досвіду офіціанта й активному використанню ресурсів, таких як LinkedIn та Indeed, чоловік швидко знайшов вакансію. Ефективним підходом стало не лише надсилання резюме онлайн, але й особисті візити до роботодавців. Тенгіз поділився, що завітав у 20 місць, залишив резюме у 15, отримав три запрошення на співбесіду та знайшов роботу. 

Українська громада у Вінніпезі знаходить способи підтримувати зв’язок із культурою та допомагати одне одному. Тенгіз разом із друзями створив організацію, яка проводить зустрічі, вечірки та караоке для українців. Ці заходи дарують емоційний відпочинок, знайомства та відчуття дому. 

За час існування організації було проведено десятки подій у різних форматах. Конкуренція з іншими ініціативами лише мотивує до покращення якості заходів. Учасники вірять, що кожен знайде свою аудиторію, адже емоційна підтримка та згуртованість є ключовими для будь-якої громади. 

Вінніпег стає для багатьох українців новою домівкою, де вони вчаться адаптуватися, планувати фінанси та будувати нове життя. Завдяки активній громаді та ініціативним людям, українці не лише знаходять підтримку, а й створюють умови для розвитку й успіху.

Alevtyn highlighted the critical importance of financial preparedness for newcomers. Drawing from personal experience, he estimated that a minimum of $4,000 to $5,000 per person is needed for the first month in Winnipeg. This amount covers essential expenses such as housing, daily necessities, and job search-related costs. However, he emphasized that even this may fall short without proper planning, English proficiency, or a network of local contacts.

He also noted that the Canadian government’s $3,000 financial assistance has played a pivotal role in easing the transition for many Ukrainians, enabling them to cover initial expenses and reduce the immediate financial burden.

Navigating the Job Market

Tengiz recounted his job search journey in Canada, which began with his first role as a banquet server at a hotel. His prior experience as a waiter and proactive use of platforms like LinkedIn and Indeed helped him secure employment relatively quickly. He stressed the value of combining online applications with in-person visits to potential employers.

“I visited 20 places, left resumes at 15, got invited to three interviews, and ultimately landed a job,” Tengiz shared. His story underscores the importance of persistence and adaptability when seeking employment in a new country.

Building Community and Cultural Connection

Beyond financial stability, maintaining cultural ties and building a supportive community have been vital for many Ukrainians in Winnipeg. Tengiz and his friends founded an organization that organizes social events, including gatherings, parties, and karaoke nights. These events provide emotional support, networking opportunities, and a comforting sense of home.

Since its inception, the organization has hosted numerous events in various formats, continuously improving through friendly competition with similar initiatives. Participants believe there’s room for everyone, as fostering emotional well-being and unity remains essential for all newcomers.
